Bunny owners should be on their guard for a painful condition that may affect their four-legged friends as the weather heats up.
Leicester's Guinea Pig and Rabbit Rescue Centre recently warned about the dangers of fly strike, which can particularly affect rabbits, the Hinckley Times reports.
The condition occurs when flies lay eggs in the damp fur of bunnies, meaning their skin becomes infested with larvae.
Liz Williams, the centre's manager, told the paper that the summer heat may lead to an increase in pests attacking pets so owners should make sure their animals' coats are kept clean.
"It is really important that owners check their bunnies' rear ends daily for any loose droppings because if they are not removed flies will settle and then lay eggs," she said.
As the warm weather continues, pet lovers are also encouraged to make sure their animals have constant access to water and are sheltered from direct sunlight.
Animal lovers concerned about their furry friends getting sunburn can apply cream to exposed areas, such as ears and noses where appropriate.
