Our German Shepherd is losing her nails and the vet doesn't seem to know why. Has anyone else heard of this?

Some form of infection in the nail bed? If the nail bed is damaged, then the nails will go. My boy damaged a nail bed catching one of his dew claws, and it was removed. It does grow back, but not to full size - more of a nubbin, and then it will break off very close to his pad again - were advised at the time that it might not grow back at all - he uses his for cleaning his teeth... so am glad he has something. Could try warm salt water - doubt it would hurt. Did your vet consider this as a possibility? I am sure I vaguely remember there is something else you can do - if it comes back to me will let you know.

Hi,  have just read your question and don't have an answer.  My dog also a German Shepherd is losing all her claws too.  Did you ever get to the bottom of it and find out what the remedy is?  We had three claws removed by the vet under anaesthetic and now the rest are all coming off.  The vet was unable to give advice or draw any conclusions.

Check what floor cleaner your wife is using or u are using......My wife  switched to a cheap Tesco 29p  disinfect as my dogs nails started to look bad........Not so toxic....it worked out ok..But once the nails have fallen out suggest a vet...

I'm really interested to know if there is any suspected link with the use of cleaning products, My 2 year old G.S.Dog seems to be losing his claws one by one, I have 2 other dogs who are both fine but my boy seems to be going to lose them all. My dogs are trained to one area to toilet which I clean with bleach or disinfectant and I'm hoping that I haven't caused it. I've never seen this before and I have owned 7 dogs over the years, I have mainly hard floors indoors and wondered if the nail bed could be getting some impact stress from being mainly on wood or tile floors. I would be grateful if anyone has similar circumstances with the problem, incidently once the nail is off my dog seems quite ok, it's only whilst theyre loose that they bother him

My 2 year old German Shepherd is having a time with his nails... about a month ago he spilt one and had to have surgery to remove part of it, and now, last night one of his front pinky-nails completely fell off! I don't know what this is caused by or what we should do!

Any advice?

The best way to prevent nail disease in your dog is to keep its feet groomed and clean. If you are not comfortable cutting its nails, call a professional groomer handle the situation.Generally dogs are used to scratching, rubbing, dugging the ground. This will ensure that its feet are in top condition and that the nails are examined regularly.
